In 2016 Adelante Bolivia initiated a scholarship program for college students in Cochabamba, Bolivia, with the aim of improving educational opportunities for women and students from disadvantaged backgrounds studying technology related fields like computer science and engineering. Adelante Bolivia is partnering with the University of San Simón in Cochabamba, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Bolivia, to provide two annual scholarships to students from the School of Science and Technology at the University.
Adelante Bolivia decided to award its first scholarships to women at the school, as part of a broader initiative to encourage educational opportunities for women in Bolivia. Women have historically been marginalized Latin America and especially in Bolivia however in recent years there has been a growing movement in Bolivia to promote women’s rights and providing scholarships is a small but significant way through which Adelante Bolivia can support this important cause. In April 2016 we awarded our first scholarship and will award a second scholarship in August 2016. For more information on our newest scholarship recipient click here.
The goal of the scholarships is not only to provide financial support to needy students, but also to provide them with the opportunity to give back to their communities and to help others by serving as volunteers with Adelante Bolivia, assisting the organization with computer trainings and other supporting services. We feel it is vitally important that those who benefit also work to benefit others thereby creating a cycle of unified and sustainable progress.
